Keeladi is a small village near Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. The archaeological excavations conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology at Keeladi have revealed a Sangam period settlement dated to the 6th century BCE by radiocarbon dating.
The excavations have provided evidence for the existence of an urban settlement in Tamil Nadu during the Sangam period. The findings have included brick structures, terracotta ring wells, and over 15,000 artifacts including pottery, beads, and tools.
The discovery has pushed back the date of the Sangam period by another three centuries, proving that urban civilization existed in Tamil Nadu since at least the 6th century BCE.
The Keeladi findings have sparked renewed interest in the history of the Tamil people and have provided valuable insights into the ancient Tamil civilization.
